New Clark City sports facilities celebrate modern Filipino architecture, design
Sports facilities rising in New Clark City for the upcoming South East Asian Games celebrate modern architecture and design showcasing Filipino culture and lifestyle.
The new sports facilities are part of Phase 1A of the New Clark City National Government Administrative Center (NGAC). The facilities include a 20,000-seater Athletics Stadium, a 2,000- seater Aquatics Center and an Athletes’ Village, and are surrounded by a 1.4-kilometer river park development with bikeways and jogging paths.
“When we designed the sports complex, we wanted it to be both a display of modernity and our culture.
We wanted it to be a showcase of authentic Filipino identity,” says Arch. Royal Pineda, principal architect and CEO of BUDJI+ROYAL Architecture+Design, the firm behind the world- class design of the New Clark City facilities.
The Athletics Stadium takes inspiration from the “caldera” or crater of the Mount Pinatubo and the contours of the surrounding Zambales and Sierra Madre ranges. What makes the design more iconic is the use of lahar as building material and incorporating nature’s color such as the lava (active orange) on the composite steel frames, exuding adrenalin in sports and representing the Filipino people’s resilience.
The roof structure of the Aquatics Center meanwhile resemble native lanterns made of Capiz shells and the framing mimics the patterns of the woven fish nets used by local fishermen.
Infrastructure developer MTD Philippines, the project partner of the Bases Conversion and Development Authority (BCDA), has committed to finish the new SEA Games sports facilities in New Clark City by August 2019.
“More than an attraction, these facilities are an expression of the government’s unwavering support for our national athletes,” said PHISGOC Deputy Director General/Mayor of Athletes’ Village and Security Services Arrey Perez.
The 9,450-hectare New Clark City is envisioned to be the country’s first smart, green, sustainable, and resilient metropolis in the country.
