SUMMARY:Inspection of the National Academy of Sports by President Rodrigo Roa Duterte
DESCRIPTION:President Rodrigo Roa Duterte led the inspection of the National Academy of Sports (NAS) learning and training center for deserving Filipino scholar-athletes on June 14 at New Clark City in Tarlac. \n\n\n\nAs part of the ceremonial activity\, the President visited the world-class Academic and Administration Building and the Multi-Purpose Gymnasium\, both of which are included in the Php 557.8-million Phase 1 of the NAS project. \n\n\n\n“I commend the National Academy of Sports\, the Bases Conversion and Development Authority (BCDA)\, and all government and private partners that contributed to the construction of this new and significant institution despite inherent limitations of the pandemic … This National Academy of Sports is envisioned to be a world-class facility that would serve in the forefront in our efforts to provide a conducive environment for the academic and sports training and character development of our young athletes. It is therefore my hope\, and maybe my prayer\, that the pioneer batch of student-athletes become well-rounded Olympians and champions who will carry our flag in the international sports arena and inspire a deep sense of patriotism among Filipinos\,” President Duterte said. \n\n\n\nFor her part\, Education Secretary and NAS Board of Trustees Chairperson Leonor Magtolis Briones said that\, “As part of the National Academy of Sports\, we\, at the Department of Education\, are very thrilled with the President’s inspection of the sports facilities that would surely produce world-class student-athletes that can represent our country at different sports events worldwide.” \n\n\n\n“We are calling our promising student-athletes to study here at the National Academy of Sports to help our country perform better and at a higher level during regional or worldwide sporting events\, especially now that we have our world-class sports facilities and program to hone them\,” Sec. Briones added. \n\n\n\nThe Academy is mandated to implement a quality and enhanced secondary education program\, integrated with a special curriculum on sports. It seeks to identify and hone academically competent youths with strong athletic potential into responsible Filipinos who will play vital roles in nation-building. \n\n\n\n“Our point A to point B should take us from home to podium – from National Pride to Global Achievement. NAS’ approach toward holistic formation by combining Sports Training\, Academics\, and Support Services utilizing a Values Campaign Framework\, aims for the student-athletes to be fully prepared and equally competitive in their respective sports and in the race called life\,” said NAS Executive Director Joy Reyes. \n\n\n\nThe President signed on June 9\, 2020 Republic Act 11470\, establishing the National Academy of Sports System “to develop the athletic skills and talents of students in world-class sports facilities which are at par with international standards.” \n\n\n\nThe NAS System is attached to the Department of Education (DepEd)\, in close coordination with the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC). Under the law\, the New Clark City Sports Complex will serve as the location of the NAS campus\, with the Bases Conversion and Development Authority (BCDA) in-charge of the construction of classrooms\, dormitories\, other sports facilities\, and related amenities. \n\n\n\n“We at the BCDA are honored to provide the world-class facilities for the training of the country’s future champions at the National Academy of Sports here in New Clark City. This climate-resilient learning center\, which the President inspected today\, links seamlessly into the development of the Clark sports training complex\, as well as the universities and academic institutions which will also rise here\,” said Atty. Aristotle B. Batuhan\, BCDA officer-in-charge President and Chief Executive Officer. “We trust that with the National Academy Sports standing side by side with the world-class sports facilities here\, New Clark City will serve as the cradle of future Filipino champions.” \n\n\n\nThe National Academy of Sports campus is a stone’s throw away from the New Clark City’s Athletics Stadium and just a few kilometers away from the Aquatics Center\, both of which served as host venues during 2019 Southeast Asian Games. The Athletics Stadium\, the country’s first facility given a Class 1 certification by the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF)\, recently earned a highly commended nod from the World Architecture Festival (WAF) in the Sport Completed Buildings category. Meanwhile\, the Aquatics Center is the first Fédération Internationale de Natation (FINA)-approved swimming facility in the country. \n\n\n\nLooking for scholars\n\n\n\nFor the next school year\, NAS will offer programs in eight focus sports\, namely Athletics\, Aquatics (Swimming)\, Gymnastics\, Badminton\, Judo\, Taekwondo\, Table Tennis and Weightlifting – all of which are Olympic sports. \n\n\n\nThe Academy is inviting incoming Grade 7 and Grade 8 student-athletes in any of the eight focus sports to consider the opportunities that await within the NAS System. \n\n\n\nEvery year\, the Academy opens its doors to deserving Filipino youths through the NAS Annual Search for Competent\, Exceptional\, Notable and Talented Student-Athlete Scholars (NASCENT-SAS)\, which is currently on an extended run until June 30.

SUMMARY:Bike and Run Weekend Fun
DESCRIPTION:TARLAC – Celebrating its return as a hotspot for tourism and sports\, New Clark City welcomed back visitors on May 28 and 29 with a vibrant public event packed with music\, art\, wellness and all things about living a life well lived. \n\n\n\nThe Bases Conversion and Development Authority (BCDA) rolled out the excitement at New Clark City’s reopening launch entitled\, “Bike and Run\, Weekend Fun!” highlighted by two cycling events\, a fun run\, a street concert\, and tours of its world-class sports facilities. \n\n\n\nAthletes\, fans\, nature lovers\, local musicians and Zumba dancers pumped energy back onto the streets and sports arenas of this rising metropolis\, two years after closing its doors and restricting access to the public due to the COVID-19 pandemic. \n\n\n\nNew Clark City\, finished in just 18 months under the Build Build Build agenda of the Duterte administration\, was poised to step up hosting of events and activities after it served as a centerpiece venue of the 30th Southeast Asian Games from Nov. 30 to Dec. 11\, 2019. \n\n\n\nNow that quarantine restrictions have eased and the country’s tourism industry is on the rebound\, New Clark City is hitting the ground running starting with this weekend’s festivities. \n\n\n\n“With the reopening celebration\, New Clark City’s visitors got a glimpse\, if not a reminder\, of the promise of New Clark City for the Filipino nation. What we are building here is not just a venue for sightseeing and competitions\, but a community where people can enjoy life in what is envisioned to be a smart\, resilient and inclusive city of the future\,” said Atty. Aristotle B. Batuhan\, BCDA Officer-in-Charge President and Chief Executive Officer. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOver the weekend\, hips were shakin’ and groovin’ to free Zumba sessions. \n\n\n\nAdrenaline was in motion at the ceremonial bike ride and fun run on Saturday\, May 28\, around New Clark City\, wherein bike enthusiasts\, runners\, participants from partner sports organizations\, and some members of the BCDA staff put their endurance to the test. \n\n\n\nThe city’s night scene then came alive with the music of up and coming local bands at the “Twilight Delight” concert\, showcasing the artistic talents and culture of Central Luzon. Food trucks were also on hand\, serving tasty treats as spectators enjoyed the show. \n\n\n\nCome Sunday morning\, May 29\, the competition switched to high gear at the first-ever New Clark City Cycling Race organized by sportswear company Twin Cycle Gear (TCG). Upstart cyclists as young as 18 years old up to the “masters” aged 49 and above pushed the pedal to the metal in their respective age bracket races. \n\n\n\nArt in the city \n\n\n\nAside from sports and outdoor activities\, visitors were also able to see up close the artworks of New Clark City against breathtaking vistas of nature – a stunning combination that gives this rising metropolis its unique cultural identity. \n\n\n\nThe 4.5-hectare River Park features art installations and sculptures of Kenneth Cobonpue\, Bernardo Pacquing and Bea Valdes. Just outside the park at the Aquatics Center rotunda is Jude Tiotuico’s opus\, which serves as a tribute to Filipino swimmers. \n\n\n\nViewing decks were opened to visitors at both the Athletics Stadium and Aquatics Center\, which are architectural masterpieces themselves. In 2021\, the Athletics Stadium was given a Highly Commended recognition by the World Architecture Forum (WAF) in the Completed Buildings – Sport Category. The Aquatics Center\, meanwhile\, features a prominent roof design inspired by the baklad\, or the woven fishnet of local fishermen\, as well as Capiz shells. \n\n\n\n“New Clark City is building upon its heritage as a host venue of the 2019 SEA Games. The sports facilities were all built for the Filipino athlete and\, of course\, the Filipino people. By making the sports venues here accessible to the public\, we want more of our countrymen to experience the same kind of excitement and national pride that was felt during the Games\,” Batuhan said. \n\n\n\nThe public can visit and enjoy New Clark City every weekend – for free. From Metro Manila\, New Clark City is accessible via the seamless connection from North Luzon Expressway (NLEX) to Subic-Clark-Tarlac Expressway (SCTEx) through the Dolores or Concepcion Exit. Travel time will be even faster as the SCTEX to New Clark City access road will soon be opened to the public. New Clark City is also available to local and foreign air travelers through the nearby Clark International Airport. \n\n\n\nBuilding up excitement \n\n\n\nDespite its limited use over the past two years\, Batuhan assured that the facilities at New Clark City have been well-maintained. \n\n\n\nEven before restrictions were eased to Alert Level 1\, the Aquatics Center last year hosted two sports bubbles\, specifically the pre-Olympic swimming camp of the Israeli swimming team and the PSI National Swimming Selection Meet. More events have been lined up in New Clark City since then. \n\n\n\nNew Clark City also immediately bounced back and resumed the implementation of projects\, including the construction of the National Academy of Sports and other infrastructure developments. \n\n\n\nBatuhan said\, “We at the BCDA invite the Filipino people to come over and experience New Clark City. Now that we have reopened its doors to the public\, the action and excitement in New Clark City only gets better from here.” \n\n\n\n\nBike enthusiasts\, runners and participants from partner sports organizations join the fun run and bike event after the unveiling of the ceremonial banner for the reopening of New Clark City.\n\n\n\n\n\nDancers and fitness buffs participate in the first of a series of free Zumba sessions as part of the New Clark City grand reopening weekend event on May 28 to 29\, 2022. BCDA photo\n \n\n\n\n \n\nGuests at New Clark City’s reopening weekend are treated to live music at the “Twilight Delight” concert. BCDA photo\n \n\n\n\n \n\nNew Clark City’s first-ever cycling event\, organized by Twin Cycle Gear (TCG) cycling apparel\, rolls out on the second day of the rising metropolis’ grand reopening weekend. BCDA photo\n \n\n\n\n \n\nEarly morning joggers are welcome on weekends at New Clark City\, which reopened after two years of limited access due to the pandemic.
